Gene discovery for comparative biology of parasitic and non - parasitic plants . A five - week
نویسنده
چکیده
As part of an NSF-funded initiative, biology students, primarily those in the early stages of their degree program, were recruited to participate in ongoing research alongside principle investigators. In this example, ten students were given five weeks of intensive training in molecular research methods, with the objective of cloning genes involved in core metabolic processes in the parasitic plant Cuscuta pentagona (dodder) and its nonparasitic relative Ipomoea hederacea (ivy-leaf morning glory). During the session, students used bioinformatic tools to search gene databases, designed PCR primers, isolated genomic DNA for use in amplification and molecular cloning, mapped candidate clones, and prepared templates for sequencing. The students were provided resulting sequence data and asked to determine whether the effort had been successful. Each of these activities provided an opportunity for students to learn biological principles through their application towards a research objective.

Transcriptomes of the Parasitic Plant Family Orobanchaceae Reveal Surprising Conservation of Chlorophyll Synthesis
Parasitism in flowering plants has evolved at least 11 times [1]. Only one family, Orobanchaceae, comprises all major nutritional types of parasites: facultative, hemiparasitic (partially photosynthetic), and holoparasitic (nonphotosynthetic) [2]. Additionally, the family includes Lindenbergia, a nonparasitic genus sister to all parasitic Orobanchaceae [3-6]. Parasitic Orobanchaceae include spe...

Background and Objectives: Microbial quality, particularly parasitic characteristics in terms of effluent reuse in agriculture is one of the most important indices. The aim of this study is determination of removal efficiency of Kermanshah wastewater treatment(conventional activated sludge) and Gilangharb wastewater treatment plants (stabilization ponds) for cyst and parasitic eggs.Material and...

A total of 128 spiny eels Mastacembelus mastacembelus (Mastacembelidae) were collected from theGreater Zab river at Iski Kalak town, west of Erbil city, Kurdistan region, Iraq, from July 2007 to the end ofJune 2008. The fish were examined for ecto and endo parasites. The study revealed the existence of 16species of parasites (with a total prevalence of 89.06%) including: two species of protozoa...
متن کاملHorizontal gene transfer in parasitic plants.
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between species has been a major focus of plant evolutionary research during the past decade. Parasitic plants, which establish a direct connection with their hosts, have provided excellent examples of how these transfers are facilitated via the intimacy of this symbiosis. In particular, phylogenetic studies from diverse clades indicate that parasitic plants repre...

Nematode.net (http://nematode.net) is a publicly available resource dedicated to the study of parasitic nematodes. In 2000, the Genome Center at Washington University (GC) joined a consortium including the Nematode Genomics group in Edinburgh, and the Pathogen Sequencing Unit of the Sanger Institute to generate expressed sequence tags (ESTs) as an inexpensive and efficient solution for gene dis...
